Senior Structural Engineer – Department Technical Lead (PE)

Position Description:  

As the Structural Department Technical Lead with our team, you’ll work side-by-side with the Department Manager to shape the vision of the department. In this leadership role, you’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, architects, and designers, where your creativity and expertise will be appreciated and encouraged. You will oversee the technical output of the department and utilize your vision and experience to direct the plans and processes of the entire department. Your technical skills will be put to the test as you design and analyze structures for a diverse range of projects, including commercial buildings, residential developments, and public infrastructure. This position has oversight of the structural department’s technical output and provides guidance and quality control for projects with more advanced technical requirements.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Collaborative Leadership: Closely collaborate with various stakeholders, including the Department Manager, Regional Manager, department leads, project managers, and cross-functional teams. Your main focus will be to foster seamless integration of structural engineering solutions, encouraging open communication and teamwork for achieving comprehensive and cohesive project outcomes. At Stahly, the role of Department Technical Lead carries significant impact, similar to that of the Department Manager, with a specific focus on overseeing the technical aspects of the department. You will actively participate in developing the Department Tactical Plan and ensure that the technical goals and benchmarks align with our overarching business priorities.

  • Technical Oversight: Take charge of the structural department’s technical output, ensuring the highest level of precision, accuracy, and innovation in our engineering solutions. Collaborate with project teams to provide expert insights, offering guidance on challenging technical aspects of projects. Guide the direction of the plans and processes.

  • Project Management: Play a dual role as a Project Engineer and Manager for design projects. Be responsible for effectively managing client interactions within the department, ensuring smooth project execution, and delivering successful outcomes.

  • Quality Control: Implement rigorous quality control measures to maintain the highest standards of excellence across all structural projects. Conduct thorough reviews of design plans, calculations, and documentation to guarantee compliance with industry regulations and best practices.

  • Mentoring and Career Development: Foster a culture of learning and growth within the department by mentoring Project and Staff Engineers. Provide support, constructive feedback, and opportunities for professional development, empowering team members to reach their full potential.

  • Design and Software Standards: Establish and uphold design, CAD, Revit, and software standards to streamline workflows and enhance collaboration. Keep abreast of the latest industry trends and technological advancements, ensuring our team remains at the cutting edge of structural engineering.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to provide thorough structural analysis and design knowledge including lateral (wind and seismic) and gravity design utilizing all major design materials.

  • In-depth knowledge of all major structural design codes.

  • Skills and experience in staff supervision and project management.

  • Computer Aided Drafting and Design skills.

  • Thorough knowledge in the preparation of structural design drawings and details.

  • Ability to establish and maintain mentoring relationships with department staff.

Required Education and Experience

B.S. in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering (M.S. in Structural Engineering preferred), Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), minimum of 8 years of engineering experience.
